Unlike many of its neighbors in downtown Clinton, the building at 104 South Main is one story. Property
records show activity on this lot in the early 1840s when the buildings downtown primarily were built
from lumber. From the 1890s through the 1980s, the current building was home to Violette and Sons
Shoes and then Simes Shoe Store, which operated for more than 50 years. The built-in shelves to display
shoes can still be seen. This location also has housed a florist, a spinning, weaving and needle arts shop
and a modern-day mercantile.
